Last Saturday while unloading the car from my trip to the farmer's market and trying to carry too much at once I ended up dropping my precious jar of wildflower honey on the floor of my garage. See the attached photo as evidence. No, I couldn't have dropped the squash or even the watermelon even though it would have been a challenge to clean up...nothing compares to cleaning up a shattered glass jar of honey on the cement floor of your garage...just ask my sweet husband, Alex! But, I...

It was about one month ago today that Alex and I were sitting in a fabulous little restaurant with big flavors in Knoxville, TN with our good friends Jenny and Harry (who knew we'd love it) enjoying a real food meal at Rouxbarb . You gotta love the name of that restaurant and figure it was someone very clever who named it like Executive Chef and Owner, Bruce Bogartz. Bruce was precious and we all had a good time talking real, nutrient-dense foods and local farms. This Chef is walking the...

This Blueberry Crisp Recipe is loaded with the goodness of oats, pecans, almonds and coconut and not to mention, loads of fresh blueberries. And for those of you who are watching your gluten intake this recipe is wheat-free and would be dairy-free if you just wanted to change the butter to coconut oil in the recipe. Congratulations to Deana and her sweet family for buying most all they eat from the Franklin Farmer’s Market every week! That is my home market too and there just couldn’t be a better time of eating local, delicious fresh food…it’s coming out of our ears, ears of corn that is! So corny. O.K., I’ll stop. Deana has started a wonderful blog called www.pinksugarbowl.blogspot.com to take us all along on their journey of eating all this great food from local farmers.. So, for those of you...

Corn at its peak in the summer is a real treat. It’s sweet, crisp and can almost be eaten raw. I just remember, as most of you do, that we would always have it on the cob. Well that always made for some fun messy eating and a serious session with the dental floss when you were finished. We lived in Trinidad for about a year when I was in third grade and one of my favorite snacks was “burnt corn.” Really, there would be folks on the side of the road roasting the corn over an...

What do you do with all those lovely veggies in your fridge that haven't been used for a meal before you head back to the market on Saturday for more? Because if you're like me, I go to my farmer's market, Franklin Farmer's Market whether I need to or not. The answer for me is my "Farmer's Market Veggie Soup with Pistou." That's right Pistou (pronounced "pea stew") which is the French version of pesto without the cheese...so fresh and delicious. First I start with homemade chicken broth...

The young daughter of a friend of mine fell and broke her arm a few days ago and what is the first thing that came to my mind besides sympathy for that little girl but, CHICKEN BROTH! That's when you know you're a full-on "real food" convert, when people tell you about someone getting hurt or sick or experiencing bad symtoms of some type or another and you think, "what could that person eat or not eat to help heal them?" I confess, it's most all I think about on any given day, food and how...

I had my first tomato of the summer season this morning for breakfast and it was really delicious! I bought it last Tuesday at the Franklin Farmer's Market (they are now also open on Tuesdays, 3pm-6:30pm and of course on Saturdays, 8am-1pm) from Rocky Glade Farm . Let me tell you it was surprisingly good since it's still early June. You may be asking, "why did this woman just have veggies for breakfast?" Well, let's just say I had a lot of fun eating lots of stuff I don't normally...

Hey there!
Call me crazy but, I have submitted an audition video to Oprah to get my OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) TV show! My friend Leslie passed this opportunity on to me a few weeks ago and Alex and I got hopping to put together a video for submission which we just uploaded a few days ago.
Y’all know I’m on a serious mission to help change and improve the health of as many people as possible with real food and real living. Having my own TV show on a major network (Oprah is taking...

The Environmental Working Group is a "work horse" for us, the people. They are constantly researching and testing products and fruits and veggies to tell us what's good and safe to use and eat and what's not. Now, what's not to love about an organization like that? Well this morning they came out with their updated version of "The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides" where they list the Dirty Dozen (highest in pesticides) and Clean 15 (lowest in pesticides.) Now, this is all related to fruits...

I’m so excited to have the chance to meet with my “Mama’s” this morning for a time of brainstorming on the Chef Shane Kelly Eating Plan. So far I’ve had about 8 Mama’s all with 2 or more chillin’s ranging in age from 2 and up cooking up my recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks…how about that? Since I don’t have children they have been an incredible help in testing my recipes on their families and giving me invaluable feedback.
This blog is to publicly thank them for...

I just felt so tired this morning (that's me whining) and was wavering back and forth about whether I would go to the Franklin Farmer's Market or not and then I just couldn't stand the thought of "not" going, so I went. I was the kid who was always afraid she would miss out on something. :-) And, for those of you who do the same come Saturday morning and you're feeling tired and you're thinking "should I or shouldn't I?"
Let me tell you, you'll feel better when you do....
